VTT to SRT Converter

Turn WebVTT captions into an SRT file for a video editor, or SRT captions into VTT for an HTML5 video player. Paste the captions or choose a file. The conversion runs in your browser, so the file isn't uploaded.

What the converter keeps

Each caption keeps its start time, end time, position in the file, and line breaks. Italic, bold, and underline tags carry over because both formats support them. Accented letters, other scripts, and emoji stay as they are.

What changes between VTT and SRT

SRT has no place for VTT cue settings, STYLE, REGION, and NOTE blocks, cue IDs, or voice and class tags. Converting VTT to SRT removes them and numbers the captions from 1. Converting SRT to VTT removes font tags and {\an8}-style position codes, keeps caption numbers as cue IDs, and escapes &, <, and > so the VTT file stays valid. After each conversion, the page lists what was removed.

Shift caption times

When every caption shows up early or late by the same amount, enter a shift in seconds before converting. Use 2 to show captions 2 seconds later, or -1.5 to show them 1.5 seconds earlier, with up to 3 decimal places. A caption that would end at or before 0:00 is removed, and one that would start before 0:00 starts at 0:00. A single shift won't fix captions that slip further out of sync as the video plays.

Files the converter can read

Choose a .srt or .vtt file up to 1 MB, or paste the captions. UTF-8 files, and UTF-16 files that start with a byte order mark, are read as they are. A file that isn't valid UTF-8 is read as Windows-1252, the older Western European encoding many SRT files still use, and the page says so, so you can check accented letters. Downloads are UTF-8 and keep the line endings of your input.

VTT and SRT conversion FAQs

Is my subtitle file uploaded?
No. The file is read and converted in this browser tab. SummarizeVideo.ai doesn't receive or store the captions or the file name.
Why won't my VTT file convert?
A VTT file must start with the line WEBVTT. When a caption has a timestamp the converter can't read, or ends before it starts, the error names the caption and line number so you can fix it in a text editor.
Can I get plain text instead of a subtitle file?
Yes. Use the SRT to Text Converter to turn SRT or VTT captions into a readable transcript without cue numbers or timing.
Do I need an account?
No. The converter is free and works without signing in.
